freighters seized by US Customs, and others were deemed unseaworthy by the US Coast Guard (USCG). In association with Dade County Environmental Resource Management (DERM),  the vessels were environmentally cleaned and sunk off the coast of Miami for diving and sport fishing.

In 1981, the Orion became the first vessel in Miami's Artificial Reef Program when it was sunk in 100-ft of water off Key Biscayne. Since then freighters, barges, tugs, a water tower, oil platforms, US Army tanks, radio antennae, concrete tetrahedrons and even a Boeing 727, The Spirit of Miami, have been sunk.  The latest addition was the DEMA Trader, a 165' freighter sunk on October 28th, 2003 in just 85-ft of water in celebration of the Diving Equipment Marketing Association (DEMA) Trade Show being held in Miami Beach in 2003.

Our boat departs just feet from our location at the Miami beach Marina so there's no transfer from location to location. Owned and operated by RJ Diving Ventures, the Big Com-Ocean, is a 2004 46-ft custom built Newton dive boat. It is USCG certified for 49 passengers - but 36 divers are all we take to provide room for everybody. The boat incorporates fresh water showers, a camera table, rinse buckets, a restroom and a sun deck.

Conditions & Weather
The diving in Miami Beach is within the full range of the recreational diver and into the realm of Technical Diving (Tech Diving), with dives from 30-ft reefs to wrecks in 150-ft of water. Visibility depends upon the prevailing weather and the Gulf Stream, but generally averages 50-70-ft. Water temperature can be as low as 72F (25C) from January to March, and as high as 85F (33C) from July to September.

Pricing
Two-tank dive trips cost $60.00. Tanks and weights can be rented as a package for $20.00. If full Scuba rental is needed, the cost of the trip is $105.00, including a full 3/2-mm wetsuit.
